Marie made a mental note to tell Steve about the fact that Southerners shared that mentality about problems being fixed by food. It was something she'd grown up with, and it was actually really comforting to know that she had something in common with Bucky's mother, who she really would like to meet sometime.
She turned slightly toward Steve when he withdrew into himself, frowning in concern as he started speaking, confirming her assumption that his mother was in the hospital. When the exchange happened with Bucky, though, she realized it was even worse than she'd thought, and her heart broke as she put the pieces together.
"Oh, sugar, I'm so sorry," she whispered, leaning in to wrap her arms around Steve in a firm hug, hoping he would accept it and let her offer him even a few moments of support. They may have just met, but she understood what he was going through more than he could possibly know.
