It would take a long time for any of it to really feel real to them, Marie knew that from experience. A few weeks might pass by, then they would want to tell Sarah something, share a story from their day, and it would hit that them they couldn't. That they couldn't see her smile again, or hear her laugh. Her illness had prepared them for the idea of her loss, but nothing could have prepared them for it fully. It didn't matter if it took months to happen, the death of a loved one was always sudden. In one single moment, a person who was in your life suddenly wasn't any longer, and there was no way to truly ease that pain.
"You don't have to be strong for me," she told Bucky gently, turning slightly more toward him so she could reach over and rest her free hand on his knee. "That's my job right now, being strong for the both of you. I'm here if you need me, sugar."
